Reviews for God’s Unspeakable Joy

With a helping heart and much humility, Carloyn Hammond McKenzie shares her story with hopes of it paving the way for others who have experienced domestic violence. She is a good storyteller for anyone who enjoys hearing about family. She tells of events in the way one might have heard them told around the kitchen table at grandma’s house, back in the day when the men went to work, and the women got involved in the community and raised the children.
McKenzie’s honesty is striking as she doesn’t lay blame to any humble circumstances that may have led to unfortunate events. She owns the choices of her early life and tells of the love, caring, and faith of her parents and grandparents in their raising of her. For some readers, the next few chapters may be difficult to read, but it’s all part of the building of the person she becomes. The real story comes toward the end, hinds’ sight is always the best sight.
This book is for people of faith, those who just don’t know, and for those who might be wondering if there is really a hope that goes beyond today’s troubles. Some storytelling, some life coaching, much encouragement, and a light that leads to real answers may be found in “God’s Unspeakable Joy; Who Wouldn’t Serve A God Like This.”

The author details the times in her life when God’s presence was abundantly clear as well as when it worked in subtle ways. A survivor of domestic violence and having experienced serious illnesses and incredible loss, she describes the hardships and heartbreak she suffered and how, because of her faith, she understood the glory of God that got her through and made her stronger. Even when she strayed from God, he did not abandon her and provided signs to bring her back to him. She recalls the times in her life when everything was going right and how she strayed from her faith and church, thinking she had been the driving force in getting her life back on track. However, God gave her signs to lead her back to him. Woven in the story are inspirational quotes from the Bible and images to remind the reader of its abundant words of guidance, and she also provides strategies for escaping an abusive relationship within her story and at the end of the book. Her story gives hope to victims of domestic violence and those who have been tested by tragedy. It’s a powerful testimonial to her survival, the power of love, and faith.

This book is an impressive combination of a raw personal memoir, an instructional guide to escaping and avoiding abusive and toxic relationships, and a faith-based inspirational self-help book. Author Carolyn Hammond McKenzie recounts how she survived and ultimately escaped from domestic abuse with the help of her faith. By telling her story with unflinching honesty and vulnerability, she creates a powerful connection with her readers. I think that connection will help readers who have not experienced abuse themselves to understand and recognize abusive relationships on a deeper level, and hopefully it will help other survivors to feel understood and empowered. This book stood out for me because instead of limiting itself to merely telling the author’s story, it includes specific strategies for escaping abusive and toxic relationships. McKenzie offers herself as a powerful example of how faith can change your life, but she also weaves Biblical quotes throughout the book to illustrate how much inspiration and wisdom the Bible has to offer. The book’s comprehensive approach is incredibly effective.

This book offers much more than insight and instruction when trapped in the perils of domestic violence. It is a reminder of the importance of surrendering one's life to Christ even at an early age. Only through such surrender can one navigate through and even avoid the many pitfalls life has to offer with joy as well as experience His goodness and mighty power working for and in us. Carolyn McKenzie's candor and humor in sharing her story is captivating!

This is such an honest and open memoir of this author’s life and struggles and how she found forgiveness and redemption through God. She recounts her experience of teen pregnancy, early marriage, domestic abuse, and single parenting. Her story is hard to put down and she shares with such openness. You feel like you’ve known her through all of these years.

Her heartache is relatable and genuine. She makes it clear that the purpose of this book, 20 years in the making, is to help others not make the same mistakes that she did and for those who have, to share with them how she found freedom in Christ. Her testimony is beautiful and reading about how God has shown up for her time and time again is inspirational.

This is a great read for anyone, whether you can relate to her past struggles or not. It will encourage and inspire you to seek God in your situation, no matter what it may be.

Carolyn McKenzie's book, God's Unspeakable Joy: "Who Wouldn't Serve A God Like This?" is such an open book. It is about the author's life and how hard she struggled. She eventually found God which provided her with forgiveness and redemption. As the reader, you feel like you know the author with her writing being so open to her personal life, feelings, and life experiences. It is a hard book to put as you root for Carolyn and the difficult choices that she faces throughout her life. Her experiences are relatable and genuine.

I would recommend this book to people experiencing difficult life choices, seeking God to inspire them, and wanting a better life.
